i would be cerous to know what cd/dvd burner you have. and what
motherboard/proc... i also have problems to a extent. my dvd will
just drop out after a while under ide-scsi. i have also had random
weardness with them as a reg cdrom one acer 4x4x32 and a liteon
4x4x... both are rw drives the lite on is a cd/dvd rw and the acer
a cdrw i have used the dvd on both my compaq proliant and my barton/
nf7-s v2 i have had drive restet problems with them. i cant remember
exactly right now will look in logs in a couple. it would keep trying
ide reset after a little while. finaly timing out or giving up, not
shure which and the drive would stop responding till reboot.

this behayvor has ben seen in suse. rh7.3 sol 17 lfs 4.1 and 5 and
mandrake 7? or 9 which ever is the latest. i have checked the bus and
drives they will work fine in windows stand up to rigerous testing of
many types from standard checks to copying whole hdd's across them
the cd/dvd drives work fine in windows for any purpose. my most recent
build of lfs seems to react a little better how ever i havent had time
to fully expore will post on that later as well. some coruption due to
lockup hosed the 2.4.24 ide-scsi module will rebuild and try again how
ever it is a random event it seems. will see if it is related to
ammount of data pushed or heat but doubt it. it may just be a fix in
the .24 kernl that allowed it to run proper .22 or earlier was on most
of the machines.
I havent had a chance to try 2.6 for the rw how ever it seems to work
fine for reading which would cause the drives to drop in 2.4 i had
also had problems with the drives being detected by sr
