Well, if you re-read the docs, after the part about starting from a stage 3 
tarball, it has you set the symlink for your timezone, and then emerge and 
compile your kernel.  So no, a stage3 tarball does not contain a kernel for 
your system. 

If it did, that would kind of go against the Gentoo philosophy of having a 
customized system, as well.
