Gentoo Box Drops Off Network (Long)

You may want to try setting the port on the switch to 100Mbps Full 
Duplex if it is set to auto-negotiate. Sometimes having auto-negotiate 
set at both ends of the network drop can cause communication errors. If 
you have another Netwok adapter, you might try replacing it in the 
event that it is flaky. 

Just a couple thoghts on the matter.
