No problems here.  Just finished a number of CDs labeled with adhesive CD
labels containing pictures of my sister's wedding, and everyone I've
mailed them to has written back saying how great the pictures look. 
About 20 CDs with adhesive labels and not a single one went bad (yet)
after the adhesive label went on.

I can understand the gist of the problem, though.  That top layer of
plastic, if compromised, will destroy or cause errors in the metallic
layer containing the CD data.  One reason to be careful with your choice
of marker pens as well.
