Here's an excerpt from http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~sdossick/amanda/

From: "Donald L. Nash" D.Nash at utexas.edu

Here's what we use for DEC TZ87 CompacTape III drives:

define tapetype DEC-TZ87 {
~ comment "DEC TZ87 DLT CompacTape III"
~    length 12000 mbytes
~    filemark 8 kbytes
~    speed 2500 kbytes
}

If you're using Amanda. Otherwise, if it's a SCSI drive, you can just
use mt & tar/cpio.

But above ALL, I would recommend BRU - by far the best tape backup
solution for Linux, and it works with just about every type of tape
system. You can demo it for 30 days at www.tolisgroup.com and if you
like it, you can pick up a copy of it from MicroCenter for about $60 for
the personal edition.
