My thanks to Gerald and Jim, who both came through with the essential bit
that the character is entered as <CTRL-V><CTRL-M>, displaying "^M".  All of
the other suggestions, including what I came up with, insert the literal
character typed or trigger the command prematurely.

I didn't count precisely, but the SECOND pass on this block, originally 3
lines long, split out 238 lines.
