I had similar problem when I forgot to make sure /boot partition was
mounted during grub install.
boot with a boot disk, or boot with gentoo install cd, and chroot /boot
just like you did during install. Then emerge grub again, thats what
fixed it for me.
Also you may want to check with the boot partion is the only one marked
bootable, I had some problems with a couple partitions being marked from
previous os's, for some reason the 2nd partion was trying to boot
instead of first.
