what type of system is everyone running RedHat x on? I have an amd 500
w/384m ram and 80gig hd. The command line, obviously runs great, however,
the gui is quite slow. I am fairly new to linux, about 2 years experience,
but I would think an amd 500 with over 256m memory should run a little
smoother.
any hints, tips, tricks or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
That's about the same as what I run here, with an older Voodoo Banshee
(Diamond Monster Fusion 64) video card. Video card makes a big difference
from what I've heard.
I'm not as familiar with RH8's default desktop, but Gnome and KDE both have
a LOT of bells and whistles that can really eat up resources. KDE has lots
of eye-candy effects like animation, transparent moves, etc. Turning off
some of the extras, or even going for a lighter interface, will get you much
better performance. (This is a bit like stripping all the chrome, trim, and
upholstery from your car to make it lighter and faster. It works, but...)
The other thing to do is to make sure that your XWindows configuration is
optimized to your existing system.
We haven't really heard from anybody about simply recompiling the Kernel and
XWindows modules to strip out all the unused features. I seem to remember
that thread got started, but was drowned out by the Gentoo crowd.
