gentoo linux

FYI, I now have a compact, fast OS up and running. I had to do a bit of
deciphering with regard to the Gentoo kernel build instructions, but I
worked it all out. I got X up and running using WindowMaker as default
(I'm going to skip KDE/Gnome - I don't need it and they just slow things
down tremendously), and it's really nice to have an OS without the bloat.
The Gentoo 'portage' package system is very nice as well.
Verdict: the search continues, and I've only played with it for two days,
but it looks likes it will be the nicest distro I've used.... so far.
Cheers

I don't know a lot about it, but I'm one night ahead of you. I started an
install last night, and it's an interesting process to say the least.
You'll need broadband, as after getting up and running from the boot CD,
everything is pulled over the network and compiled fresh to suit your
architecture. I'm ready to go home now for part two tonight, and build
the kernel and hopefully get a system up and running, but it shouldn't be
too much trouble, as the documentation so far has been very clear and
straight forward.
Basically, it's time consuming, but I hopefully it will be a fast,
bloat-free installation I end up with, so it will be worth it. This review
has inspired me:

I saw someone on the list saying that they were running Gentoo linux.
How do you like it? Any problems getting it all up & running?
I'm looking into it as well, might just install it tonight. What better
fun on a cold and rainy tuesday...
