I'd see if it showed up in the message log file, something like /dev/cua3
or something:
less /var/log/messages
My last modem there were a few special initialization instructions for
Linux using setserial and stty to give it an interrupt and a comm port.
This might be the case if its a PNP modem to get it going. Here's a
little instruction snippet off the newsfroups:

If you type setserial -g /dev/ttyS* (where * is the port your modem is
on - mines on ttyS2) you might get back a message giving the correct
IRQ and io port, but the UART will be "unknown". I found that by doing
a "setserial /dev/ttyS2 autoconfig autoirq" and then checking the
result with the -g option again that it now recognised my 16550 UART.
After this, pppd could dial my ISP.
As a tip, if you are minicom, type ATZ and press <CR>. If you wait for
5-10 seconds you might see "OK" come back. This shows that you have
the correct io port set up (3e8 or whatever) but the wrong IRQ. (The
first couple of times I tried minicom I quit the app before the "OK"
appeared because I thought it was totally screwed!).
Oh, and check that /dev/modem (if you have it) points to the correct
/dev/ttyS* for your modem.
So, I can now dial my ISP. However, I have a new problem: according to
my Win98 configuration, my ISP will dynamically assign me a name
server IP address. However, I can't see how to use this in Linux - as
far as i can tell I need to set up the nameserver before logging in. I
haven't tried fpting etc to an IP address as I couldn't think of any
last night, so I don't know if it's just a nameserver problem or
something more fundamental. More investigation is needed!

Speaking of winmodems, does anyone want one? Its a shiny new US Robotics
56K Model 3056 pcmcia card. No receipt, so I can't return it. Besides I
have cablemodem now. Anyone want this fine collector's item? Free to a
good home.
