I haven't tried to record from any other source.  I have tried it as root
with the same results.  As far as the devfsd being configured properly, I'll
have to that as well tonight.

Would I be able to listen to audio coming in from the line-in jack if this
was the case?  Luckily I have another SB Live! card that I can try and see
if this possibly could be the problem.

No I haven't.  I'll give that a go once all of my other options are gone!
