Keyboard Problems

One thing I can think of to check is your
/etc/XF86Config file for the keyboard section.
Should look like the following

Section "Keyboard"
  XkbRules      "xfree86"
#  XkbVariant    "nodeadkeys"
  Protocol      "Standard"
  XkbLayout     "us"
  XkbModel      "macintosh"
