Calendar Help

I've installed the openappideas phpcommunitycalendar from
http://open.appideas.com/Calendar/, but I can't get it to run.  When I try
to access the main setup/admin page, I get "Fatal error: Call to undefined
function: mysql_pconnect() in .../calendar/common.php on line 75".  

That sounds to me like I've got something not configured properly for php.
I've verified that php4 is installed.  I suspect that I've neglected to
enable php4 properly...
