Are you using devfs? Did you make the changes in the /etc config files?
[Not at machine right now, will look later.]
Installed CUPS?  That is what I am using. It's not 100% yet, but fills
my 
absolute needs, if not all my wants. Like I said the lpd isn't working,
but
CUPS is [???]. So most of my apps can now print.
