I recall that .wav files go to either /dev/dsp or /dev/audio and
.au files get 'cat' to the other.

Does 'cat /usr/share/sounds/phone.wav >/dev/audio' sound better ?

Linux includes a 'play' command which routes the files automatically
along with doing some aditional setup for the 'sox' command.
