POP Mail and security

I have some questions. I am getting ready to turn on the POP mail
services for my server.
I am unsure, which path to take here.

The two configurations I am considering are:

1) POP3 over SSH
2) APOP, KPOP, IMAP server

My issues are this, I get infrequent attacks on the POP3 port (currently
disabled).
I understand POP3 daemons are more susceptible to attack, is that true?
Which server will be more secure from attack?
Also I am using sendmail as my MTA, will I still be able to use
sendmail?
And finally, I have a PHP based webmail server installed and running.
What will adding a POP server do to this?

Thanks,
