I had a similar problem with an older version of Mandrake about a year ago.
Fdisk wouldn't touch it. I think I ended up having to use Partion Magic to
remove all the partitions and do a new low level format using a low level
format tool from the manufacturer.
What kind of drive is it?
I have seen a somewhat similar problem on an old Maxtor drive that turned out
to have a serious hardware problem. (The head stepper motor was not tracking
properly - I think) By the time I got the proper diagnostic tools downloaded
and figured out the drive was almost 3 years old - and Maxtor REPLACED it with
with a brand new generic drive UNDER WARRANTEE!!!
