I assume you are running Red Hat?

I noticed this too. Caldera was not doing it to me - RH6.1 was. So, I used
the RH PPP dialer (go to the Red Hat | Internet | PPP dialer or whatever it
is) and use that. It is annoying too though. 

Or, you could just do like me and get DSL and then you dont have to deal
with PPP at all! :)
