I have an HP 600 series (I think it's a 690?) that works just fine under Linux. That was before I, er, um, messed up the hard drive that Linux was installed on, so I can't tell you at this point how it was set up, sorry. But I didn't have to do anything special, just went through the printer setup in KDE. I was using Mandrake 6, if that helps.
