Screen Goes Black after running Xserver

I've had all sorts of problems getting the ubuntu
family
to run on various machines. The same CD will work on
one
machine and not on another. I tried to use one to
install
Linux on a client's machine. I had to fall back to
an edubuntu CD to make it work. It was very annoying.
