I agree with you Brian, with one exception.  Enlightenment is the best looking out of the box if you like it.  I don't.  Never have.  I never saw the what the big deal was other than the transparent windows, which they seemed to be the first at.  For me, one word always described E, yuck.  I'm not a big theme hound, I switch them around every once in a while and end up back at default with just a change of wallpaper.  Most of the time even that is covered up and so it's not a big deal for me.  I go for functionality.

To each his own, but KDE has always been fine for me on a full desktop and fluxbox or Windowmaker on a minimal machine.  I even used XFCE for a while.   Make it work first, then make it pretty.  They can all be reconfigured to the point that their mama wouldn't recognize them, so take a chance, open up that GUI control panel and go wild.
