Infrared scanners for recording fingerprints and Linux

Anyone done anything with this? A friend has asked me to
build a system to record a child's fingerprints, photos,
and general characteristics in a user friendly manner and
write the data to a "business card cd". Doing all from a laptop.
I can handle the photo and the user-friendly interface
easily enough, but don't know where to start with the 
IR fingerprint scanner. Also, I'm not entirely sure an
IR fingerprint is the way to go.
