gentoo <> kernel developers. This probably has more to do with not 
having broken links in gentoo than anything else.
(Not that I don't agree with calling 2.6 developmental, but from a purely
official point of view it's a stable release as are all even numbered kernels)

This behavior, on the part of kernel maintainers, is no different than
it has ever really been. Is it?

I hadn't noticed any extras in 2.6 that are missing from 2.4. But then
my needs are simple and for the most part I could probably shuffle along
just fine with a kernel 2.2. For those of you who live out there on the
bleeding edge, well that's the price you pay. It's not called bleeding edge
for no reason. I've done my time bleeding. I let others do it now.
