RPM and Portage are almost completely different tools for very different 
purposes.  All RPM does is manage the packages - it handles the 
installations, tracks what's installed, and what's dependent on what.  The 
portage system includes the ability to fetch packages, fetch dependent 
packages, etc.  It would be more realistic to compare Portage to up2date, 
urpmi, or YaST.
