Perhaps some aspect of the code used by ISPs to logout users for
connection inactivity.  Given that a modem and a computer both are
logging in on the same general type of connection, whatever logs a modem
user out for inactivity should be able to log out a regular user for
inactivity.

ISPs have been using Linux for years, right?
