Take a look at the smartmontools:

I've just started using these tools to check my drives on a regular
basis.  Most harddrives within the past few years have SMART
capabilities.  SMART can tell you when a drive is starting to fail as
well as other things like drive temperature and r/w errors and corrections.

The smartmontools package contains two utility programs (smartctl and
smartd) to control and monitor storage systems using the
Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology System (SMART) built
into most modern ATA and SCSI hard disks.  In many cases, these
utilities will provide advanced warning of disk degradation and failure.

The January 2004 edition of Linux Journal has an article talking about
smartmontools.
