Perl Question

I am trying to install gnome onto a debian system.  However, I keep
receiving the following error:

perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
	LANGUAGE = (unset),
	LC_ALL = (unset),
	LC_CTYPE = "en_US.UTF-8",
	LANG = (unset)
  are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale("C").

I am assuming that since the LC_CTYPE is set to "en_US.UTF-8", that the
locale settings are supported and installed.  However, I do not know how
to set them.

Any and all help is appreciated.
