Had a resolution to this issue that I thought I'd post just FYI.

The woman that was installing this app told me the installer was asking for RH
9 Disk 2, so I burned her a set, gave it to her, and she let the installer
grab what it needed, and voila. Issue solved.

Was finally able to get the RPM backed out/uninstalled thanks to a great
suggestion here (sorry, the name escapes me now, but you know who you are) to
use the command and address the package not by specific filename but by
package name (is it right to call it that?).

Regardless, this worked:

[chris at 4ulord chris]$ rpm -e openssl

but this didn't:

[chris at 4ulord chris]$ rpm -e openssl-whatever-theversion-number-is-now.rpm

Thanks again for all the help, everyone.
