Not true. My laptop has both a USB optical mouse and a touchpad and BOTH work equally INSIDE X
with XFCE 4. But, your problem may be, as Johnathan said, with gpm. You may need to find and
alternative to gpm or open links in a terminal that has gpm disabled if that is possible. Either
way, a good test would be to disable gpm and then run links to see if it has mouse controls built
in. And for X, you could have in your start up scripts to disable gpm in the tty that X runs in.
