Need external burner

I need to set up a not-too-slow external CD burner for a friend.  Anybody have 
a USB model that's not too old?  Do the USB's have IDE drives in the housing, 
so I could theoretically upgrade an old one by sticking in a newer drive? 
 
I suppose I can rig something with a long IDE cable and an enclosure, but I'd 
like it to be a little more elegant (and more teen-ager proof) than that.
