Okay, since two people have made this comment without giving
evidence, I'm responding. I've used public transit for fifteen years. I've
always found KCATA routes convenient and when I need to call
221-0660, they are helpful and friendly. I've ridden buses plenty in
Austin TX, Oakland, CA, and Seattle, WA. Kansas City is comparable,
though Austin was cheaper than all at $.50 per ride. I quite
enjoy riding the Metro. What's pathetic about it, except the absence
of light-rail?
By the way, if you're from Salt Lake City, you might find the diverse
population of religions in Independence nice company. There is
a church every three blocks in all directions, and few of the churches
get along with each other, although all have prophecies that they will
someday.... I love Independence best of all because it's unpretentious.
It is what it is, warts and all. Harry S. Truman's hometown, so it's got
some historical character, especially now they're finally rebuilding it
with a solid 'old west' flavor. A local attorney, John McClain, won a giant
lawsuit and is buying and restoring old buildings very nicely, basically
cutting through all the city corruption by doing it himself. He's
singlehandedly turning Independence into a tourist destination. He
buys up cruddy old delapidated homes, pours $200,000 into 'em and
sells 'em at a profit. He's doing the same with the downtown. Another
ten years, and Independence will be purty.
