Debian #!@?&* dist-upgrade problems

Ok, I tried to upgrade my debian from stable to testing.
Everything was going fine until it tried to upgrade
libxrender1 which somehow had an unofficial version 1.1
installed and it wanted to install version 1.0.8. I am
assuming this is part of the problem, as it says that
libxrender1 isn't installed, but apt-cache says that
1.1 is installed but 1.0.8 isn't. Now my system won't
finish the dist-upgrade because I can't get ast this stupid
issue. Anyone have any suggestions, because I'm about to
trash debian and go back to Mandrake on the laptop?

Seven from valley-lords where orchards used to grow,
Nine from dotcoms doomed to die,

one OS to rule them all, one OS to find them,
one OS to bring them all and in the darkness bind them,
In the Land of Redmond where the Shadows lie." john thrum
