dd just copies 1 and 0's starting at an address. I remember reading an
article once that told the reader to defrag a drive, calculate free space,
and dd the drive using bs=1M and count=[size]... I don't remember why the
author was recommending it however.

Partition Magic 8 does ext3... And I've read of successes with gnu parted.
Though I've also read of people saying you have to convert your ext3 drive
back to ext2 before doing it.
