This is Eric Raymond's Open Source initiative position paper for SCO v 
IBM case.  It has all the pertinent parts in there.  Also, just about 
any book on Linux has an opening statement on the history of Linux and a 
brief outline on the history of Unix, one of the best is in OReilly's 
"Essential System Administration", which covers most forms of Unix.
