It IS an American social norm.  American males and women in dominate
positions shake hands with other men.  Two women will either shake hands or
offer a slight hug depending on their social standing and the reason for the
greeting.

The point of the thread, anyway, is that is you want the job you'd better
just shut up and shake. :)
