That sir, is what RFCs are for.  RFCs are the calaborative rule of the
internet.  Developers need to investigate what RFCs are out there, and
which ones have gained popular support, and have been fully thought
out.  These become standards, and then are inserted into products.  The
Internet is ours, but give the Corporate entities a chance they will
sieze it through our apathy.  They aren't evil, just often unchecked. 
In the internet, RFCs give us a chance to place that check on them. 
They are in business of making money. If there is a standard that others
are already adopting then the large Corporate software vendors need to
support that standard, even if they have thier own standard they hock as
well.
