Another Newbie Question

...this implies I've actually *USED* X on linux, which I generally
haven't.  If you count RedHat's graphical anaconda installer, I guess
I've run X on an AMD K6-233, which is the lowliest box I've done a full
RH install (although I've installed debian and caldera on P75/90 class
systems...I don't remember if the caldera install ran X or not, but I
know the debian one didn't).

I am, however, about to jump on the desktop linux bandwagon, and am
working to put together a new system that will run X and open-office.

A compaq Prolinea 590 (Pentium 1-class 90 MHz) with 32 Megs.  While I've
pushed my 486 systems into service as web-servers, I never set one up
with a development environment.
