It's not the lack of processing power that is causing the skipping audio, but
rather the attempt to move a whole lot of data across the PCI to your video card
about the status of particular window. Assuming you're using XFree86 4.2:

As it says, acceleration is provided by the tdfx driver. Check
/etc/X11/XF86Config or /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to ensure that you are loading this
driver.

Check /var/log/XFree86.0.log to ensure that the driver is reporting correct
accerlation information. Have you enabled MTRR in your kernel? How 'bout AGP
support? XAA (2d video acceleration) requires MTRR in order to comunicate with
your video card in any modern way.

And if you have so much work to do, why are you complaining about MP3's not
working, anyways? Better to get it setup correctly now and not have to worry
about it later.
