You could OpenLDAP I suppose, but it's a more plain vanilla LDAP server and you
will probably end up designing your own schema from scratch.

eDirectory isn't all that expensive. You can download it directly from Novell's
site to setup and play around with it. And I think it's only a $1.00 for each
user license...

If you have the time, download both and see which one works best.
