Fortunately its not too hard to watch dvd's with gentoo.  Just typing
these two commands at the shell will install everything you need, compile,
and play a dvd movie from your local Blockbuster store:

emerge xine-dvdnav
xine -f -g -pq dvdnav://

If something violated a patent, it would download the source code from the 
author's website, or some place in the world where it isn't patented.  I 
believe its still legal for scientists to research patented devices to 
further technology...
