The problem with the Real Player systems is that the link is not to a file,
but to a script that triggers the player to start and then retrieve the
file.

I'm not sure of the status of Real for Linux, but for audio there are tools
that will redirect the output from any audio player from the speakers to
another program, allowing you to, for instance, record the output of the
Real Player.  Don't know about Video, but you'd have to perform similar
trickery.

I believe that people have attempted to hack the packet stream for Real and
found it not to be worthwhile.
