Has anybody worked with "Darwin" from Apple? It's apparently an open source version of the BSD derived OS X layer, and is available for x86 platforms (see http://www.opensource.apple.com/projects/darwin/1.4/x86_install_notes.txt). It runs Xwindows, which I presume means not "Aqua", but I wonder how complete a package it is?
