easy question

I hope this one doesn't sound too lame...but

Can someone tell me the name of the program that gives you the witty
saying/message of the day at login? And/or where its located? It runs by
default in Debian and Slackware, and I have access to a slackware 8.0 machine,
but it doesn't seem to have the /etc/bashrc or /~/.bashrc files I'm used to in
RH.

So, if anyone can tell me what the program is, and perhaps where it gets called
in Slackware, I'd be much obliged.
