  Let's rephrase this just a bit, and see if it sounds less like an Urban
Myth:

  Lots of hardware has NVRAM or EEPROM that holds configuration information
on how the hardware is supposed to function, or even worse yet, the actual
program that the device's processor executes.  The correct term for this
sort of thing, of course, is "FIRMware".
