My experiences were pretty much the same when I installed one of the Big
Distributions on my 1GHz laptop. It seems they like to have every service
running, maximum libraries linked for maximum features, and the kitchen
sink to boot. From what I have seen, its getting worse. Much worse.

This is why I use Gentoo on everything including my P120 with 32MB of ram.
And its fast. Why? Because I learned quickly that I don't need every
foreign language library compiled in with every desktop socket linkage
layer toolset with every filesystem known under the sun. I just wanted a
simple system with what I needed.

Sure, Gentoo compiles slowly using a P120 processor. That's why I did the
mount command to its drive with NFS from my GHz laptop and had it crank
out everything overnight. Through this simple distributed processing
power, I now can compile selected packages picked from a very organized
directory that makes it easy to find what I want and only what I want.

I don't understand why linux distributions have taken on so much bloat
lately when simplicity works so well. Why give up the 900 pound gorilla
from Redmond to get an 1800 pound gorilla that wants even more food?

Was this a rant? Sorry. Please forgive.
