The most significant difference here is DOS is real-mode single user...  
*nix is not.  If you're the only person using your system, feel free to
do "whatever"...  just remember (for the sake of this junior folks who
might be paying attention) that if you hose a multi-user system you're
not the only one to be inconvenienced.
