Two simple questions

the top one didn't work but this did

 /home/rod  $ ln -s   pointee   ./sub/pointer

and I have no idea why????
Thanks for the help now i can move on.  As for the other question, i
my try 
        >$  system("cd ./" sub "; ln -s  "pointee pointer" ; cd .."
not that it matters now.
