I haven't tried jabber, but I have used everybuddy for the last year and
it does quite well.  My old copy does AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, MSN, Jabber, and
IRC.

I also played with console variants, so I could chat on a wyse-60
terminals when I didn't feel like firing up the big color monitor...  They 
also work wonderfuly too.
