FCC regulates US "56k" modems to 53k due to the modem voltages required to be
used at 56k. If you modded your modem to use the full 56k modulation, you'd
probably voltage overload the telco equipment in the central office if your
CO were antiquated. This is the real reason why the FCC only allowed the 53k
modulation. One good thing about the K56flex. Using their protocol, you could
get 56k within the voltage limits of the FCC. Too bad that didn't make it into
v.90 spec. On that note, has anyone bought a v.92 modem yet? :-)
