Brian,
If your'e _not_ planning to compile a new version of
glibc, then I would just leave /usr/src/linux and
friends alone.
I would compile the new kernel+modules somewhere else.
The /usr/src/linux headers are matched with glibc, and
have no need to match a running kernel at all.
Glibc upgrades can easily break your box, and are best
left to doing upgrades via whatever methodology your
distro uses. Yes, glibc upgrades are even more possible
to render a box unusable than a broken kernel, since
it is much easier to have a prior version of your kernel
available to fall back on.
